Where do people find trends? Are they easy to spot, or does it take the right person at the right time to find them?

Does a trend story in general (not the specific one we will be writing for class) absolutely require an anecdotal lead? Or is that simply the approach that is most effective most often? Can a good trend story be written with a lead that resembles one of a hard news story?

Is there such thing as a mix between a trend story and a features story, and if not what is that called?

Is a trend story always outlining a problem? Chewing tobacco hurts kids, shopping early hurts company profits, volunteering is becoming more mandatory and that's stressful, etc. Maybe that's a trend in trend stories just because people are more likely to give comments that are complaints, so the article shifts in that direction, but maybe negativity is a necessity in trend stories...

I don't really agree with all the topics covered by the trends stories, but the fashion with which they covered them was very good, using a variety of sources, from everyday people to experts.

What is the most effective way to start a trend story? What are other common trend story structures?

What is a good source to use? What is the line between an interesting source and an incredible source? Is there a specific structure that's commonly used?

What exactly differentiates a trend story from a different type of story as others also include angles and leads. Are there certain sources that need to be used or certain ways that things need to be said in order to be a "trend story"?

Does a trend story need to encompass at least a given period of time for it to qualify as such? I think I have certainly taken in that a change has to occur/be occurring, but does this change have to have some level of gradualness to it?

In a trend story, how do you find an angle and follow it? How do you distinguish between a good source and a bad one?

How many angles is a trend story "supposed to" have? Would introducing several different sources improve the story or just clutter it?

Should an angle be maintained throughout the story? Should the author plays devil's advocate when explaining the trend?

Seeing that it can be difficult to predict how far into the future a trend will last, how long-term does something have to have been to be considered a trend rather than a fad? Is a trend story bad if it seems to be taking a side, even if the author's opinion isn't directly expressed?

Should a trend story be news? That is, should the trend in question be new and current? It seems like people wont care as much about a trend that's a few years old, but that trend might be important.

Do trend stories generally appear together or can they be spread out throughout a publication?

How significant are individual people's stories and experiences to trend stories? They need to back up the trend, of course, but is it enough just to use them to lead into the story and refer to them briefly at the end (for example, as in the back-to-school shopping story) or should they be prevalent throughout?

In response to Leah's question: I think the best trend stories are more current because they are things that are most popular and "trendy." Trends that are less current may not be viewed with as much interest because they may be things that people have already noticed.

Must a trend story link to a greater theme or meaning? If the article just discusses a trend without linkage, is it only an observation?
