Your Weekly Assignment Sheet reads as follows
1. For Monday, 02.08
DUE: a) Argument #1 to TurnItIn; b) first reading on Topic #2, comment on classblog
CLASS: Topic #2 – Technology in Education
In addition to that, I mentioned in class Thursday that I'd like to you to post any outside research you did on Consumerism and/or the Consumerism Scenario to the classblog. You can follow Richard's example below.
Remember: For your argument, you are writing either an editorial for the local newspaper or an op-ed to
that newspaper, and that setting for this scenario is not Newton. Thus, it should not be
for a student newspaper, nor should it be for the TAB. Please, refer back to the handout
concerning the differences between an editorial, an op-ed, and a column, as well as the
common pitfalls for students on this assignment. You definitely need to connect to two
sources in your argument, and you should not refer to the class debate directly or indirectly.
The first reading on Topic #2: Technology in Education is "A Luddite teaches English at Newton South" by Mr. Jampol, the now former South English teacher, that ran in the TAB when he was still teaching in 2013. It's a fairly short (there are two pages, though) perspective on what he saw. The comment on the classblog should be a separate entry from supplying sources on the Consumerism discussion, and you should a) ask for clarification on any terms or ideas you don't understand, and b) respond to one of his ideas. Do you agree or disagree with him? Be specific.
One last word on Consumerism: consider the advertisements, and the hype around them, for the Super Bowl. If you're only paying a little attention to the way our culture is reacting, you know how much these ads cost and how much people talk about them. Advertising is a multi-billion dollar industry, and a lot of thought an effort goes into it. Is it reasonable to think that these masters of their industry don't know how to get high-school students to pay attention?
