Your homework assignment is to read "Politics & the English Language" by George Orwell. Then, make some responses to that essay in a comment. The content of that comment is below.
NOTE: There's a bit of a tricky SPAM filter with this site, so do yourself two favors -
1) type your responses first somewhere else (the text of an email, a MS Word or Google doc, etc.), and then copy-and-paste them into a comment on this blog post;
2) if you press "submit" on a comment, but it doesn't show up within 10 minutes, please send me an email. DO NOT SUBMIT MULTIPLE TIMES. You can put your responses in the email, but, usually, I am able to find a student's comments in the SPAM filter if I know to look for it.
For your responses, do the following:
a) note a specific point in Orwell's argument with which you agree. Quote a few relevant words or phrases (no need for a formal citation, but some direction, such as "In the opening sentence...," "In the last two paragraphs...," "About five paragraphs in..." will be helpful), and then give your reason for agreement.
b) in the same way, note a specific point of disagreement.
c) give an example of a similar element of language that you feel as passionately about as Orwell.
All three of these responses should be in one comment with your name upon it.
If you are placing your comment after the first five students have done so, read over what your classmates have down and make note in your a, b, or c if you are in agreement or disagreement with a classmate's a, b, or c.
If you have any issues completing this assignment because of a technical problem, please let me know sooner rather than later.
