Read Chapter 7 of The Great Gatsby. In a comment to this post, choose a few different options from this list:
a) Clarifying questions - what don't you understand about what happened in the plot? Are there lines or even words you don't understand?
b) Connections to other parts of the book - what symbols are here that exist earlier in the story? What new symbols are here that connect to earlier ones? What are ideas that didn't seem connected before that come together here?
c) Personal connections - what is one of the characters feeling? Can you relate?
d) Connections between texts - what's happening here that seems to be similar (or connected but opposed) to something in another book you've been assigned in high school?
e) Thematic ideas about America - how does what happens in this chapter connect to our discussion about America, the 20s, and the American Dream?
f) Thematic ideas about the human condition - what's going on here that's as old as the first stories? What are these characters struggling with that so many of us do?
Be specific. Refer to specific pages and quotations. Do more than mention things -- analyze and synthesize.
